 Policing International Trade in Endangered Species: The Cities Treaty and Compliance by Rosalind Reeve, Regulation of the international trade in wildlife, worth billions of dollars a year, is the subject of one of the oldest multilateral environmental agreements, the 1973 Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, or CITES. Seen as the flagship wildlife agreement and best known for imposing a ban on international trade in elephant ivory, its mandate covers over 30,000 species. Essential to the Convention's success is its system for inducing compliance with its rules. This thoroughly researched and clearly written book traces the evolution and analyses the effectiveness of the CITES compliance system. It identifies weaknesses and draws on experience from other international compliance systems to suggest improvements.
